Why apples and art? Well, in the Cornwall area, there’s a very fitting connection. The Seaway Valley is not only known for its heritage and artists, but it’s also the home of one of nature’s works of art, the McIntosh Red apple. The McIntosh was discovered by homesteader John McIntosh while clearing his land in Dundela, near Morrisburg, and he christened it the McIntosh Red.

The original tree was partially burnt when the McIntosh home caught fire in 1894. The tree survived and continued to bear fruit until 1906. The Mac is still grown in Dundela at Smyth’s Orchards from 100 year old trees grafted from the first tree. Famous throughout the world, every McIntosh Red descends from the first Mac discovered in Dundela in 1830.

So, while on tour, make sure to sample the apple fare provided and enjoy a piece of our local history at the same time.

Admission to all sites on the tour is free, and works may be purchased and/or commissioned from any participating artist or artisan.
