Unique Tool Lending Library To Open In Cornwall
September 29, 2014Cornwall Ontario – Did you know that the average power drill is used for just 12-13 minutes during its lifetime?
Rony Macrone is looking to put area drills (and other tools) to better use with the opening of the Cornwall Tool Library.
The tool library will work like a regular book library in many ways. An assortment of power and hand tools will be made available to people looking to complete projects at home and at the office. Tools are “borrowed” for a specific period of time, and the returned to the library for others to use.
“The tool library will act as a community resource that will reduce the burden of improving and greening theplaces where we live, work and play,” says Rony Macarone, founder of the Cornwall Tool Library.
Mr. Macarone expects the tool library to appeal to both experienced and inexperienced community members who are interested in repairs and maintenance, building projects and crafts. The tool library will be run entirely by volunteers.
“Many of us will buy an expensive tool for one particular job, and after that job is done, the tool sits on the shelve gathering dust,” says Mr. Mararone This concept puts those tools to use on an ongoing basis.”
The concept of a tool library is a relatively new one to North America, with just a few dozen on the contintent and none currently operating in Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec.
Mr. Macrone also plans on making training available to the community and hopes to empower members to transform their homes, landscapes and projects into vibrant spaces that reflect a commitment to sustainability and environmental concern.
The Cornwall Tool Library will open its doors officially on October 11, 2014 and will be located at 10-A Fourth St. E. in Downtown Cornwall. The Library hours will initially be Wednesdays: 5-7pm, Saturdays: 12pm-3pm, Sundays: 11am-1pm. After school and summer programs in electronics, robotics for kids 7-16, alongwith seed sharing, gardening and soap making workshops for adults are scheduled to begin in early spring 2015.
The Cornwall Tool Library is the first project started by the Resource-Based Economy Group Inc. (RBEG).
