Medical Recruitment and Medical Scholarship

Cornwall has long supported community health care initiatives, especially the recruitment of medical professionals and the ongoing enhancement of community health care assets. Cornwall Economic Development is actively working with local and regional health sector partners to recruit medical professionals to the community.

There are two active programs: Medical Recruitment and Medical Scholarship.

Medical Recruitment and Relocation Program

The City of Cornwall’s Medical Recruitment Relocation Program supports the recruitment and relocation of new medical professionals to Cornwall. The Program offers a forgivable loan up to $25,000 in exchange for 3 years return-of-service in the community. Eligible expenses are reimbursed based on submitted receipt, up to a maximum of $25,000. The loan can be used to cover the costs of moving, office setup, administration, and other expenses deemed necessary for starting a practice in Cornwall.

Since 2001, approximately 50 physicians have taken advantage of the program.

Medical Scholarship Program

The Cornwall Medical Scholarship provides financial support to a local medical student who agrees to establish a practice in Cornwall upon completion of their studies.

The medical scholarship is valued at $25,000 annually and may be awarded, each year, for up to six years, to a qualified medical student. In order to be eligible, candidates must be a resident of Cornwall or SDG and must be accepted or currently enrolled in full-time studies in a Faculty of Medicine with the intent of becoming qualified to practice Family Medicine in Ontario.

In return for scholarship funding, the recipient will set up a family practice and undertake admitting hospital privileges in Cornwall for a minimum period of five years.
