Medical Recruitment and Medical Scholarship

Cornwall has long supported community health care initiatives, especially the recruitment of medical professionals and the ongoing enhancement of community health care assets.

There are two active programs: Medical Recruitment and Medical Scholarship.

Medical Recruitment

Cornwall Economic Development continues to partner with the Cornwall Community Hospital in a joint effort to recruit medical professionals to Cornwall. Activities include marketing Cornwall to existing or recently graduated medical professionals at various opportunities across Ontario. Since 2006, the medical recruitment effort has helped 46 physicians and specialists to Cornwall.

Interested doctors can apply for assistance to offset the costs of establishing their offices in Cornwall. The Medical Recruitment Program provides up to $25,000 for a physician or specialist deemed necessary by the Cornwall Community Hospital and the City of Cornwall.

Medical Scholarship Program

The Cornwall Medical Scholarship provides financial support to a local medical student who agrees to establish a practice in Cornwall upon completion of their studies.

The medical scholarship is valued at $25,000 annually and may be awarded, each year, for up to six years, to a qualified medical student. In order to be eligible, candidates must be a resident of Cornwall or SDG and must be accepted or currently enrolled in full-time studies in a Faculty of Medicine in Canada with the intent of becoming qualified to practice Family Medicine in Ontario.

In return for scholarship funding, the recipient will set up a family practice and undertake admitting hospital privileges in Cornwall for a minimum period of five years. Additional information can be found here: https://www.cornwall.ca/en/city-hall/medical-scholarship.aspx

Other Medical Recruitment Efforts

There is ongoing demand for medical professionals and related support staff in Cornwall. Current employment opportunities, which can include positions at the hospital, dental offices, medical offices, health clinics and private sector agencies, can be found on the Choose Cornwall Job Board.
