Beyond 21 Raising Funds to Renovate New Home
May 13, 2019Cornwall Ontario – Beyond 21 has begun renovations on their new home at 1924 Pitt Street and has launched a capital campaign to complete the project.
The new building will be unique in that it will be designed to address both the sensory and physical needs of adults who have a developmental disability. At 8,000 sq.ft. the new space is significantly larger than the organization’s current home. The building will be fully accessible and will include a teaching kitchen, great room/gathering area, dining area, creative arts room, fitness room, and adult sensory room.
“We will be much more visible on Pitt Street and we are excited to create a hub that invites the community to connect with our participants,” says Jane McLaren, Executive Director for Beyond 21. “We have secured the keys to our new building, and, with the help of our community, are preparing to open the doors to welcome our participants and the community to our new home!”
Beyond 21 is looking to raise $750,000 to pay for renovations as well as outfitting the building with furniture, appliances, and other necessary supplies. The campaign has already raised over $157,000.
Tim Mills, a retired superintendent with the Upper Canada District School Board, will be chairing the capital campaign.
“As a firm believer in community, the Hub will truly be where adults that attend Beyond 21 will develop home and social skills, connect to community and enjoy recreation and leisure,” said Mr. Mills.
Beyond 21 currently serves close to 40 families, a number organizers hope to be able to increase once the renovations are completed. The anticipated move in date is late fall 2019.
“Beyond 21 believes that community is a place where everyone belongs.,” says Ms. McLaren. “We know that adults with developmental disabilities have hopes and dreams, the same as anyone else. Our vision is to see these adults fulfill their dreams by living connected, respected, and contributing to our community.”
About Beyond 21
In 2009, a group of parents began meeting to discuss their concerns about the prospects for youth with developmental disabilities once they left formal education at the age of 21. Three years later, Beyond 21 opened its doors and has been serving the community ever since, first from the campus of T. R. Leger School in Cornwall, and currently from Knox St Paul’s Church. Today, Beyond 21 supports developmentally challenged young adults in the Cornwall and surrounding area who are no longer eligible for the school system.
