Cornwall Ontario –  One of the biggest events to occur in Eastern Ontario in decades was formally recognized recently at the Business Excellence Awards.

The International Plowing Match was recongized with the Tourism Excellence Award. It was the very first time the award has been presented.

“I am thrilled that our TEAM has abeen recognized,” says Jim Brownell, Chair of the 2015 International Plowing Match & Rural Expo. “It was a lot of hard work by a lot of people that started several years ago and culminated with an absolutely fantastic event. This award is shared with the Board of Directors and the great team that brought this event to our community!”

The International Plowing Match & Rural Expo took place over several days in September 2015 on 1,000 acres just north of of the town of Finch. It is considered the largest show of its kind in North America, and over 1,000 volunteers were mobilized to put on the event.

The event attracted close to 100,000 visitors and was viewed by many as one of the best plowing matches in recent memory. It was named by the Standard-Freeholder as the top news story of 2015.

“The Plowing Match had an impact far beyond the gates of the site itself,” says Linda Wilson, Executive Director of Cornwall & the Counties Tourism. “Area hotels, restaurants and shops were all full. It was a great opportunity to introduce the region to people from across Canada and the USA.”

The 2015 event marked the third time that Stormont Dundas and Glengarry has hosted the International Plowing Match and Rural Expo. The match was previously held in Cornwall in 1936 and in Crysler in 1958.

The modern day City and Counties of SDG were well showcased to the visitors with a massive dispay tent and bus tours to and from and the match itself. A number of events related to the event were also held offsite.

In addition to good memories, the Plowing Match leaves behind a legacy fund that will be distributed to local hospitals.
