Seaway News Gathers Awards
February 9, 2018Cornwall Ontario – One of the most important aspects of life in any community is the sharing of news. In Cornwall, one of the key media partners is the Seaway News, a long-time newspaper and magazine publisher.
This past week two key members of the design staff at the Seaway News were recognized for excellence.
Colleen Parette and Kim Poirier Froats each received ‘The Silver Quill’ from News Media Canada (formerly the Canadian Community Newspaper Association) in recognition of ‘25 Years of Distinguished Service To The News Media Industry.’
They join co-workers Jennifer Mayer and Rick Shaver, who are already recipients of ‘The Silver Quill.’ Together, the four Seaway News employees have over 125 years of service in the newspaper industry.
“I’ve been very lucky to have great staff and making the presentations to them in my capacity as Vice President of Ontario Newspaper Association was a honor,” says Rick Shaver, Editor and Publisher of the Seaway News. “Good staff makes for a good product.”
Colleen Parette started with Seaway News in 1989 as a part-time college student doing her placement and was hired full time in 1990 (28 years of service). She became Production Manager in 2005 and is the lead designer on Cornwall Living and TASTE magazines, as well as Cornwall’s official Visitor Guide.
Kim Poirier Froats (26 years) also works in the Production Department. Kim started her career at another newspaper and has been with Seaway News since 2004.
Seaway News was founded 33 years ago and has grown locally to become a leader in Eastern Ontario. With 11 full time and 4 part time employees at their base, with another 40 plus in delivery, Seaway News continues to deliver to over 38,000 homes in Cornwall and area weekly.
“People are not always aware that producing a weekly paper takes a small army ever week – from writing the stories, selling advertising and then then producing the product – all with a 48 hour window to get it delivered,” says Mr. Shaver. “When people ask how we’ve managed over the past years, the answer is simple: it’s because of dedicated and valued staff like Colleen, Kim and Jennifer.”
