Canada Cartage Acquires Seaway Express
November 22, 2022Cornwall Ontario – One of Cornwall’s leading transportation companies has been acquired by Canada Cartage.
Founded in 1990 by Bob and Linda Gauthier, Seaway Express has focused on serving the Eastern Ontario market. The company has grown to over 65 tractors, trailers, and straight trucks, as well as container chassis. An important competitive advantage for Seaway Express is their 35,000 square foot terminal which is located in the Cornwall Business Park, home to regional DCs for large Canadian retailers such as Walmart, Loblaw and Shoppers Drug Mart. Seaway Express provides warehousing and consolidated appointment deliveries for many carriers and vendors who ship into these retailers’ distribution centers. Seaway also supports customer supply chains in Quebec through a strong carrier partner network.
“We are very excited about the opportunity to become part of the Canada Cartage group.” says Seaway Express owner Bob Gauthier. “Seaway has grown thanks to dedication and hard work of our employees, and we have a strong family feel here. Canada Cartage shares those values – they started as a family company and still maintain that approach in business. This was a very logical next step for Seaway so that we can continue to provide opportunities for our customers and our staff.”
Seaway Express has twice been named as Cornwall’s “Business of the Year”, won the Ontario Trucking Association “Excellence in Entrepreneurship” award, and has numerous “Shipper’s Choice” awards from Canadian Shipper magazine.
“This is an important acquisition for Canada Cartage,” said President and CEO Jeff Lindsay. “Cornwall is a fast-growing hub for DC’s serving Eastern Canada and Quebec. Seaway helps Canada Cartage to better serve our customers in this market, and to gain an experienced and dedicated work force. Five years ago, we had no facilities between Oshawa, Ontario and Montreal, Quebec. With the acquisitions of Fred Guy Transportation (2017), Grant Transport (2017), and City Transfer (2021) in Ottawa, and now Seaway, we have built out a very strong presence in these markets.”
Canada Cartage has extended employment to all Seaway drivers and staff. Bob Gauthier will be staying on to ensure a smooth transition, and day-to-day operations will be the responsibility of Seaway General Manager Melanie Hamel.
