Cornwall Ontario – A group of Chinese scholars will be returning home with a new appreciation for Canada – and in particular – Cornwall.

Chinese scholars visit St. Lawrence College in Cornwall

The six scholars have been ensconced at the Cornwall Campus of St. Lawrence College for the past several weeks to observe classes in the Supply Chain Management Program. They are visiting from Qingdao Harbour Vocational and Technical College, which is located in the Huangdao District of Qingdao, Shandong province in China.

The group has been in Cornwall since September 19th.

“We have been very pleased to showcase the expertise and practices of St. Lawrence College,” said Jennifer Haley, Associate Dean of the Cornwall Campus. “During their stay, we have had the opportunity to showcase Cornwall and the region by bringing them to various events and attractions.”

Memorable highlights include visits to the Cornwall Community Museum, Pumpkinferno and a boat tour of the St. Lawrence River. The group also got to meet Jim Kelly, the Irish Ambassador to Canada, when he visited the the campus. The group also had a chance to visit Ottawa and Montreal and experienced a true Canadian tradition in the form of a Cornwall Colts hockey game at the Cornwall Civic Complex.

In recent years St. Lawrence College has strengthened its profile in China and other markets. The Chinese delegation is the latest in that effort, which includes a growing group of international students who have come to St. Lawrence College in Cornwall to learn and, by extension, experience Canadian culture.

Enrolment at the Cornwall campus has grown to over 1300 students this year, including a significant increase in international students. This segment of the student population has risen from 60 to 300 students and is a result of dedicated outreach efforts by College staff.

“We have students from well over 10 countries in Cornwall, and more than 40 countries College wide,” said Cornwall Campus Dean Deb Stava. “This international flavour creates an opportunity for cultural exchanges and makes the campus a very interesting place to be.”
