City Encourages Backyard Gardening

Cornwall Ontario  – The City of Cornwall is encouraging residents to plant backyard gardens this summer.

“Council and I are enthusiastic about the benefits of backyard gardens,” said Mayor Bernadette Clement. “Growing your own vegetables, herbs, and fruits promotes food security, healthy living, and a safe activity for families to enjoy together at home.”

Resources available to Cornwall residents include:

  • Free compost at the landfill at 2590 Cornwall Centre Road. Bring your own shovel and containers when picking up compost, which is available when the landfill is open: Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
  • Free mulch at Guindon Park and Optimist Park. Bring your own shovel and containers.
  • NOTE: when collecting compost or mulch, maintain a safe distance of 2 metres from other residents. Avoid touching surfaces, and be sure to wash your hands before and after.

The Eastern Ontario Health Unit has confirmed that local garden centres may offer curbside pick-up. Community gardens remain closed.

The following local businesses may have backyard garden supplies in stock:

  • Marlin Orchards & Garden Centre
  • Harvest Garden Centre
  • Bonville Gardens
  • TSC
  • Canadian Tire
  • Home Depot
  • Home Hardware
  • Rona
  • Walmart

Residents who grow more than they can eat are encouraged to share with local food banks.
