Cornwall Teams Up with Timila for Paramedic Training

Cornwall Ontario –  Local manufacturer Timila has stepped up to facilitate the training of new paramedics in Cornwall.

Every year, approximately 20 new paramedics are hired by Cornwall SDG Paramedic Services. Most are recent graduates with very little emergency driving experience in a vehicle of the size and weight of an ambulance.

Cornwall SDG Paramedic Service training at Timila

Timila operates a modern manufacturing facility which is located across the street from the Paramedic Headquarters in the Cornwall Business Park.  They have a substantial parking lot which is of the appropriate size to conduct driver training for paramedics.  Timila have graciously allowed paramedics the use of their parking lot over the past several years to do the training.

“It is difficult to find an appropriate training location,” says Bill Lister, Chief of Cornwall SDG Paramedic Services. “Timila’s layout is the perfect solution, and we are very grateful for the partnership.”

Cornwall SDG Paramedic Services trains its paramedics using a certified driver training course.  Paramedics must be proficient at a number of advanced driving skills, including reversing over long distances. Traffic cones are strategically located to teach vehicle awareness and defensive driving habits while being conscientious about the patient and the paramedic located in the patient compartment of the ambulance.  Paramedics practice operating the vehicle at various speeds and circumstances, and the best way to develop these skills is in a closed parking lot.

“Timila is pleased to be able to assist Cornwall SDG Paramedic Services in their training program, says Claude Losier, President and Chief Operating Officer for Timila Cornwall. “The work that paramedics and first responders do is incredibly important.”
