Cornwall to Host 2020 National Broomball Championship
August 20, 2019The national event will feature 16 of the country’s top juvenile (ages 14-19) broomball teams battling it out at the Benson Centre from March 24th to 28th.
Two local teams, the Seaway Valley Devils and Eastern Warriors, will be hosting the event, which is sanctioned by the Canadian Broomball Federation. Eight boys’ and girls’ teams from Ontario, Quebec, Saskatchewan and Manitoba will face off to be crowned Canadian champs.
The games will be played out on two ice pads at the Benson Centre, Cornwall’s versatile multi-sports facility which features three ice pads, an indoor field house and tennis court and numerous community rooms.
“It’s a perfect venue for events like this with hotels, restaurants, stores and everything else so close by,” said Christine deRepentigny, Chair of the 2020 Juvenile National Broomball Championship organizing committee.
The event will have a significant economic impact on the community, with some 400 players and coaches spending the better part of the week in the City. Family, friends and broomball enthusiasts will also be in attendance in large numbers as well.
“Interest is already starting to build for the event and we are confident it will be a huge success,” added Mrs. deRepentigny.
If this story sounds familiar, it’s for good reason. In April of this year, Cornwall played host to the 2019 Canadian Senior Broomball Championships featuring some of the top senior teams (ages 21 and up) from across the country. The event was a huge success, with large crowds on hand to watch the action and many more watching abroad thanks to a live stream of the event.
The national broomball championship is just one of many high-profile sporting events taking place in Cornwall in the coming months. Others include the Cornwall Triathlon, the Shorty Jenkins Curling Classic and the 2020 Ontario Curling Championships, to name a few.
