Eastern Ontario Active Transportation Summit Planned for June
March 7, 2019Cornwall Ontario – Active transportation will be in the spotlight on Thursday, June 13th when the Township of South Stormont hosts the Eastern Ontario Active Transportation Summit.
This day-long event will provide opportunities to hear from and engage with noted professionals and experienced practitioners who have worked on creating walkable and bikeable rural communities.
As the longest running rural active transportation summit in the province, the EOAT Summit provides a great development and networking opportunity for those with an interest in rural active transportation planning, trail development, cyclo-tourism and more. This year’s theme is focused on how rural communities can create walkable and bikeable communities through innovation, partnerships and planning.
The event caters to a wide variety of backgrounds, from municipal staff and elected officials to business owners, community, health and social development professionals, cycling enthusiasts and more.
Agenda highlights include:
- Justin Jones, Program Manager – Share the Road Cycling Coalition who will provide an important provincial update and engage participants in the Bicycle Friendly Community award program
- John St. Marseille, City of Cornwall General Manager, Infrastructure & Municipal Works, will speak about Cornwall’s experience with the Bicycle Friendly Community program
- Kate Whitfield, Senior Associate Engineer/Planner – Alta Planning + Design to walk us through rural active transportation planning from a design perspective
- Dr Jeff Jackson, Coordinator, Outdoor Adventure and Professor, Action Sports Park Development & Outdoor Adventure Naturalist – Algonquin College who will present on risk management and mitigation for trails development, programming and maintenance
- Rural municipal staff in planning, transportation, recreation, tourism, and health share their on-the-ground experience (and lessons learned) with developing and implementing bicycle and pedestrian plans, policies and strategies
The summit is being held at the South Stormont Community Hall in Long Sault and it is being hosted in partnership with the Eastern Ontario Health Unit, the St. Lawrence Parks Commission and the United Counties of SDG.
As summit hosts, the Township of South Stormont team is using the event as an opportunity to set priorities for improving walking and cycling for residents and visitors alike. They will be hosting a planning day facilitated by Share the Road where partners and stakeholders will help them to identify current assets, determine gaps, and establish priorities.

The registration fee for the EOAT Summit is $70 per person + HST (includes lunch and refreshments). Registration can be done online.
About the Eastern Ontario Active Transportation Summit
The EOAT Summit is a project of the Eastern Ontario Active Transportation Network. Annually, the Network selects a municipality to host and organize the EOAT Summit.
About South Stormont
The Township of South Stormont sits along the banks of the St-Lawrence River just west of the City of Cornwall. It is home of the Lost Villages that were flooded to make way for the International Seaway and the Power Dam project of 1958. Today, the series of connected hilltops of the Lost Villages through the St. Lawrence River is known as the Long Sault Parkway which is home to beaches, campgrounds, nature trails, and a 15km on-road section of the Great Waterfront Trail.
Recreational cycling opportunities abound in South Stormont with paved off-road sections of the Waterfront Trail that connect at either end of the Long Sault Parkway and extend west to the Township of South Dundas and east to the City of Cornwall, where the Waterfront Trail continues off-road for the entire 18 km length of Cornwall’s waterfront.
