Medical Scholarship Program Looking for Applicants
August 20, 2018Cornwall Ontario – The efforts to attract additional medical professionals to Cornwall is an ongoing activity, assisted with two programs funded by the municipality: recruitment of existing medical professionals and support to students aspiring to become family doctors.
“Increasing the number of medical professionals in Cornwall will help maintain the excellent quality of life that our residents currently enjoy,” said Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy. “It is also essential in making our community attractive to new residents and new investors.”
Medical Scholarship
Applications are now being accepted for the Cornwall medical scholarship, which provides financial support to a local medical student who agrees to establish a practice in Cornwall upon completion of their studies.
Dr. Vanessa Carter was the recipient of the first scholarship and has successfully established her practice in Cornwall following the completion of her studies. Another recipient, Brent Patterson, will be opening his practice once he completes his residency at the Winchester Hospital. Johnathan Tran is another recipient currently completing his studies.
Scholarship Details and Application Process
The medical scholarship is valued at $25,000 annually and may be awarded, each year, for up to six years, to a qualified medical student. In order to be eligible, candidates must be a resident of Cornwall or SDG and must be accepted or currently enrolled in full-time studies in a Faculty of Medicine in Canada with the intent of becoming qualified to practice Family Medicine in Ontario.
In return for scholarship funding, the recipient will set up a family practice and undertake admitting hospital privileges in Cornwall for a minimum period of five years.
Interested candidates who meet the qualifications are invited to submit an application by Friday, September 7, 2018. The application should contain a brief personal profile, information on the University at which medical studies are being (or will be) carried out, awards and achievements and any other information the applicant deems appropriate.
Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee, who may wish to follow up with an interview. The successful candidate will be asked to enter into a legal agreement with the City of Cornwall for the duration of the scholarship period.

Medical Recruitment
In addition to the Medical Scholarship, the City continues to partner with the Cornwall Community Hospital on a joint effort to recruit medical professionals to Cornwall. Activities include marketing Cornwall to existing or recently graduated medical professionals.at various opportunities across Ontario. Interested doctors can apply for assistance to offset the costs of establishing their offices in Cornwall.
