St. Lawrence Marathon Returns this SaturdayApril 28, 2023
Cornwall Ontario – The popular St. Lawrence Marathon will make its return this Saturday, April 29th with a full race field for its marathon, half-marathon, 10K and 5K races.
A field of 725 participants – the majority of them from outside the region – will be lacing them up to compete in the 8th edition of the annual event. It’s the largest field ever and a good sign for the future of the race.
“That was our limit (for participants) and we sold out five weeks ago,” said St. Lawrence Marathon Director Sebastian Warner.
The marathon – which begins at 7 am at Crysler Park Marina and runs east to St. Lawrence College in Cornwall – features a field of 225 races. The scenic Riverside Trail, which serves as the race course, has helped put the St. Lawrence Marathon on the map with marathon runners from near and far.
“Our marathon course is one of the fastest Boston (Marathon) qualifiers in Canada,” Warner added. “It’s flat, it’s fast and it’s also scenic and traffic-free.”
The half-marathon will kick off at 9 am at St. Lawrence College while the 5K and 10K races will begin at 10 am at the college site – which also serves as the finish for the races.
Thanks to the effort of over 100 volunteers, including the race committee, the event offers 17 aid stations along the route, with each one being staffed by various helpers. It’s these aspects of the tournament that have also helped to make the race a can’t-miss event for many runners.
“Our volunteers are awesome. It’s a full-service marathon that we offer,” Warner said.
As for the future of the event, Warner and company are hoping to take things to the next level if and when the circumstances warrant it.
“We would like to increase the numbers (of participants in future years). We just have to look at the logistics and make sure the infrastructure is available to accommodate it.”
