Students Recognized for Their Sense of Community and Leadership

Cornwall, Ontario – Team Cornwall recognized and celebrated eight local high school graduates at Pommier Square on Friday, July 8^th. The students were awarded the Team Cornwall High School Bursary for their initiative and pride in the Cornwall community.

While academic achievement deserves recognition, Team Cornwall believes that youth should also be recognized for demonstrating strong qualities of character and good citizenship.

“These students are now Team Cornwall ambassadors,” said Peter Gault, Chair of Team Cornwall. “These bursaries are to recognize these exceptional students and help them receive the education they want, as well as to encourage them to promote our beautiful city.”

The Team Cornwall High School Bursary is awarded to graduating students who demonstrate leadership and a sense of community. It has a value of $500 and is meant to encourage students to become ambassadors for Cornwall as they continue their education.

The bursary program is in its sixth year and continues to grow with the addition of St. Matthew Catholic Secondary School last year and T.R. Leger this year.

This year’s award winners, each selected by their schools, are:

• Faruzaa Amit: a graduate of St. Joseph’s Catholic Secondary School, Ms. Amit will be attending the University of Ontario Institute of Technology next year to pursue Forensic Psychology.
• Emmerson Baxtrom: a graduate of École secondaire publique L’Héritage, Mr. Baxtrom will be attending St. Lawrence College in Cornwall for Game Development.
• Taylor Beitz: a graduate of Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary School, Ms. Beitz will be attending the University of Minnesota in Kinesiology, where she was awarded an athletic scholarship for soccer.
• Alexandra Jasiewicz: a graduate of Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School, Ms. Jasiewicz will be attending the University of Toronto to pursue an English degree in Arts & Science.
• Cynthia Lovejoy: a graduate of St. Matthew Catholic Secondary School, Ms. Lovejoy will be attending Algonquin College for Chef Training, and then continue her education in Culinary Management. Ms. Lovejoy would like to return to Cornwall to open up her very own restaurant.
• Alix Marcil: a graduate of École secondaire catholique La Citadelle, Ms. Marcil will be attending Bishop’s University to become an elementary school teacher.
• Gabrielle O’Byrne: a graduate of St. Lawrence Secondary School, Ms. O’Byrne will be attending the University of Ottawa to pursue a Criminology degree.
• Staci-Ann Rochon: a graduate of T.R. Leger, Ms. Rochon will be attending St. Lawrence College in Cornwall to become a social service worker.

“These students were chosen because they are leaders and proud of our city,” said Team Cornwall member Andre Pommier, who also hosted the event. “As ambassadors, we hope they will continue to speak highly of Cornwall and let everyone know how great of a community this is.”
