Cornwall Ontario – Cyclists have a new reason to enjoy Cornwall’s Riverside Trail – a new layer of asphalt in key sections of the picturesque waterfront route.

New pavement has been laid on the part of the path the runs between the Cornwall Canal and the St. Lawrence River in the west end, a section just east of Brookdale Road, and along the eastern section from Gray’s Creek to Glen Stor Dun Lodge. The latter section included significant work to replace a section of a retaining wall. In addition to these most recent efforts, City staff regularly inspect the trail and repair problem spots as they are identified.

“We understand how popular the Riverside Trail is, and we want to ensure the experience is as positive as possible,” says Lori Gibeau, Manager of Recreation, Culture and Tourism with the City of Cornwall. “We have an annual budget dedicated to maintaining our cycling and pedestrian infrastructure.”

Cornwall boasts some of the best traffic-free cycling in Ontario. The Riverside Trail stretches for 23 kilometres along the St. Lawrence River and is part of the world-famous Waterfront Trail. A network of bike paths and bike lanes connects all points of the city to major amenities such as Lamoureux Park, the Civic Complex and Aquatic Centre, Downtown Cornwall, the Benson Centre and the Saunders Hydro Dam Visitor Centre. The City is constantly expanding its network of cycling and multi-use trails.

Destination Canada has recognized the Cornwall’s cycling trails by including it in a new tourism marketing effort called the Ottawa-Montreal-Cornwall Cycling Corridor.

Cornwall’s active transportation plan focuses on expanding walking and cycling infrastructure to create a connected, sustainable community, guided by the Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan. Cornwall is recognized as a Silver-level Bicycle Friendly Community, with over 62 km of off-street paths and 42 km of dedicated bike lanes. Cornwall Transit buses are equipped with bike racks, bike rentals are available at Marina 200, and mountain bike trails and a BMX park is located in Guindon Park. As the City grows, the cycling and walking network grows as well.
